How do you catch Leptospirosis and Weil’s disease?
The leptospira bacterium which causes Leptospirosis and Weil’s disease is present in animal urine, particularly rodents, so will be present in their surroundings. Nearby water and damp material (such as soil, vegetation) are all potentially contaminated.
The bacteria can get into your body by swallowing contaminated water or absorbing it through the eyes, nose, mouth or cuts/scratches either directly or indirectly by touch after contact with water or anything else contaminated. The Hardjo form of Leptospirosis is transmitted from cattle to humans.
Who is at risk of contracting Leptospirosis?
Employees who work in an environment where there may be rat populations, including near water, flood zones, wasteland, sewage, agricultural areas or construction or waste disposal sites can be vulnerable. Those who are in close contact with animals, such as farm, veterinary and pest control workers are obviously also at risk of contracting Leptospirosis.
Professionals who participate in leisure activities near water are also at risk, for example the high profile case of double Olympic champion rower Andy Holmes who died from the condition in 2010.
